Литература по истории английской армии Столетней войны на русском языке крайне скудна. Отчасти это связано с традиционным пренебрежением советской историографии к военной истории, отчасти – с тем, что современная российская медиевистика чуть ли не поголовно ударилась в преклонение перед школой Анналов. При этом, правда, благополучно позабыв, что данная школа получила прекрасные возможности для теоретизирования и обобщений как раз благодаря кропотливому труду двух столетий предшествовавшей ей традиционной науки. У нас же таковое счастливое обстоятельство успешно отсутствует – к сожалению, работы Пузыревского, Голицына и прочих дореволюционных исследователей безнадежно устарели, новых же не создано по сей день (юмористические опусы Тараторина, Куркина и иже с ними, конечно не в счет). Появление нескольких переводов (и в первую очередь, отличной работы Ф. Контамина “Война в средние века”) несколько улучшает положение (хотя, скажем, из последних публикаций книгу Функенов никак нельзя отнести к полезным).
Всё, о чем мог узнать рядовой (а в сущности, любой, не допущенный в святая святых – столичные библиотеки) читатель об английской армии 1337-1453 гг. сводилось к фантазиям Энгельса и Г. Дельбрюка (единственное исключение – автореферат Д.Н. Миронова, оставшийся практически незамеченным, и статьи Ю.И. Писарева, посвященные, увы, лишь комплектованию армии). Так называемая “История Англии в средние века” В.В. Штокмар (2-е издание, якобы “дополненное”, вышло в 2001 г.) сообщает следующее: “Ядро английской армии составляли наемные отряды пехоты, набранной из свободных крестьян (идея-фикс советских историков – Авт.). Особое значение имели отряды лучников. Английские лучники стреляли быстрее и на более далекое расстояние, нежели стрелки противника”. Дальше можно не читать. И по этой, с позволения сказать, научной работе учились поколения студентов (в том числе и автор этих строк)!
Единственная отечественная монография по Столетней войне (написанная Н.И. Басовской) посвящена лишь политической истории войны, в военной истории автор, похоже, совершенно не разбирается. Английская армия удостоена не менее “блестящего” разбора, чем у В.В. Штокмар: “В войске преобладала рекрутировавшаяся из свободных крестьян пехота. Армия находилась под единым командованием короля (глубокомысленное замечание, неясно, правда, в чем тут отличие от французского войска – Авт.). Отряды рыцарей были, по существу наемными и подчинялись также королю, а не отдельным феодалам”. Комментировать весь этот бред нет никакого желания.
К сожалению, на нынешний день это и все, чем могла нас порадовать отечественная наука. Поэтому при написании соответствующих разделов настоящего сайта (в основу которых легла моя рукопись “Столетняя война и английская армия”) я вынужден был использовать только зарубежную литературу. Большая часть перечисленных ниже работ, однако, так и осталась бы для меня недоступными, если не помощь и содействие В. Шульзингера, И. Каюмова, Д. Уварова, А. Нефёдкина, Г. Даньшина, Ю. Брановского и О. Семеновой. Им я приношу свою искреннюю благодарность.
